Profile: Behind every successful society, there is at least one visionary whose dedication and leadership inspire its growth. The same holds true for this Society. Shri Vasantrao Tatyasaheb Mohite, the Founder Chairman of Shri Hanuman Udhyog Samuh, Yalgud, is the guiding force behind the establishment of this co-operative society. With a strong commitment to the welfare of the rural community, he envisioned an organization dedicated to the upliftment of poor and needy people in Yalgud and the surrounding villages. His objective was to provide sustainable and remunerative livelihood opportunities, particularly through bakery, dairy and allied activities, enabling economically weaker sections to improve their standard of living. Under his leadership and vision, the Society was established with the mission of promoting socio-economic development, creating employment opportunities, and improving the quality of life of the rural population. Yalgud is a rural village in Hatkanangale Taluka of Kolhapur District, Maharashtra, with a population of approximately 9,000. Located about 27 km east of Kolhapur on the Kagal–Ichalkaranji Road, the village lies close to the Maharashtra–Karnataka border and near the left bank of the Dudhaganga River, which forms part of the boundary between the two states. Owing to its location, both Marathi and Kannada are widely spoken by the local population, reflecting the region's rich cultural heritage. The name "Yalgud" is derived from the Kannada language, where "Yal" means seven and "Gud" means hillock. Accordingly, Yalgud literally means "the land of seven hillocks," aptly describing its geographical setting at the foothills of seven small hills. The Dudhaganga River flows approximately 3 km from the village and serves as a major source of irrigation for the agricultural lands of Yalgud. Drinking water is supplied from the Panchaganga River, enabling the village to benefit from the resources of both river systems.Yalgud is also located about 3 km from Hupari, a town renowned across India as the "Silver City" for its traditional silver ornament manufacturing industry. Hupari is especially famous for handcrafted silver jewellery, including anklets and chains, which are marketed throughout India and exported to international markets. Its proximity to Hupari provides additional economic opportunities for the residents of Yalgud and contributes to the region's overall socio-economic development. |
